BSG Annual Conference 2009: Durham University

The British Society for Geomorphology (BSG) Annual Conference will take place from Monday 7th – Wednesday 9th September 2009 at Hatfield College, Durham University. Paper and poster sessions will be held in the Geography Department nearby. We invite papers and proposals for oral session themes covering all aspects of geomorphology. In addition, we intend to give a high profile to poster sessions, and would therefore encourage the submission of abstracts in both oral and poster form. We hope the meeting will bring together researchers from across the discipline at all career stages and would especially invite postgraduate students to submit papers. The Annual Conference will as usual feature the Linton and Wiley Lectures. The annual Frost Lecture will be given in its traditional after-dinner slot by Professor Bob Allison (University of Sussex). In addition to the conference itself, we are organising two workshops to honour former Chairs of the Society (in its BGRG days): Ian Evans and Rob Ferguson, both of whom will have recently retired by then. On Sunday 6th there will be a workshop on ‘Morphometry and glacial geomorphology’. On Wednesday 10th September, there will be a workshop on ‘Fluvial processes’. Both workshops will be free for those attending the main conference. We look forward to welcoming you to the University of Durham in 2009. For further details please contact Prof Tim Burt or Prof Stuart Lane at Durham University: t.p.burt@durham.ac.uk, s.n.lane@durham.ac.uk

Professor John Thornes - in memoriam

It is great sadness that British Society for Geomorphology acknowledges the sudden passing of Professor John Thornes. He collapsed recently while doing field work and died shortly afterwards. John was a long standing member of the BGRG (now BSG), a former Chair of the BGRG in 1986/87 and recipient of the Linton Award in 1988. He was Chair of Geography, Bedford College (London), University of Bristol and Kings College London. John Thornes was a geomorphologist with special interests in hillslope hydrology and erosion processes in tropical rainforests and semi-arid environments. His passion for all things geomorphological and his charismatic leadership touched many of us, and his legacy is still and will remain highly visible in many research projects in the years to come. On behalf of the membership the BSG sends condolences to John's wife Rosemary and children Claire and Chris. Dr Richard Chiverrell. BSG Honorary Secretary. 23rd July 2008.

BSG Awards Nominations 2009

The BSG recognizes outstanding contributions to the discipline by presenting awards annually at the AGM (June). We hope that members of the BSG will encourage nominations for these prestigious awards. The Linton Award is given to a geomorphologist who has made a leading contribution to the discipline over a sustained period. The winner is invited to present the Linton Lecture, which is one of the central elements of the AGM. The Warwick Award is made for excellence in geomorphological research as recorded in a named publication or set of publications. The recipient must be under 35 years of age or have commenced work on their doctorate not more than 15 years previously. The Chorley Award is given for the most significant original published contribution to geomorphology by a current or recently graduated post-graduate student. Details of the awards, including citations, lists of previous winners, and nomination forms, are available on the BSG website. Follow this link to the awards pages. Please take a few minutes to download nomination forms from the website to make a nomination for one or all of these awards - the more the merrier! The deadline for nominations is Friday 2nd February 2008. Richard Chiverrell, Honorary Secretary

Future BSG Annual General Meetings

The BSG schedules the Annual Conference typically held in early July on a three year cycle, with the 2009 meeting to be held at Durham University followed by Sussex University 2010. Any institution or research body interested in hosting the 2011 Annual Conference is encouraged to contact the Honorary Secretary (Richard Chiverrell).
